Project Bulkhead: ("Hello, World!")
Secrets are no fun, so we thought we’d let you in on a little something we’re cooking up over here at Chief Rebel. We’re excited to share that we’ve been hard at work on the beginnings of a project that we’re calling Bulkhead.
Usually, you wouldn’t see these kinds of projects until we have a glitzy launch trailer but, rather than waiting to show you this project until after we’ve got it all polished up, we thought it’d be fun to take you on a journey with us.
One of the things that’s important to us at Chief Rebel is “finding the fun” before we end up in the style over substance trap. We see too many games being rushed to release, with little to no substance in them. This is not the way. You’ll see this a lot in this journey we’re taking you on with a lot of placeholder art and a focus on validating the experience before we settle on exactly how we want this game to look.
For players that love sci-fi, teamwork, and thinking outside the box, Bulkhead is the collaborative adventure game that lets you and your friends create a band of cunning and fierce space scoundrels to outsmart your way through the galaxy.
In Bulkhead you’re always stronger together and shooting your problems in the face is never the only solution.
“It’s been a dream working on a project like Bulkhead. I’ve always loved space adventures; from Star Wars, to Cowboy Bebop, to Firefly, to The Expanse, having a crew of misfits on a ship going from planet to planet, getting into scrapes, barely escaping with their lives and staying one step ahead of the law is a fantasy near and dear to my heart. I’ve been playing co-op shooters with my friends for decades; from Left 4 Dead, through Payday, to Vermintide, and Helldivers, but what always felt missing were more opportunities for solving problems without shooting them in the face.
As we’ve started developing the concept, it’s been so much fun finding ways to feel like an underdog while still feeling empowered. To feel like Radical Edward breaking into security systems, Rocket Racoon jury-rigging a makeshift gizmo, or Lando Calrissian sweet-talking their way past a security droid. In our game, we want every playstyle to feel like the right way to play, and deliver on the fantasy we all share of being a rogue out there in the cosmos.”
Will Maiden, Game Director
Much like in the spirit of the genre, we’ve put together a rag-tag group of professionals with deep, specialised skill-sets ready to take on this new challenge.
This small team boasts over 100 years of collective industry experience working on some of the biggest titles at major studios like Avalanche Studios, Ubisoft, Blizzard, Rockstar and Cloud Imperium.
“Being part of a core team that has been involved in so many major video game titles in the last couple of decades and having the chance to see how our aggregate expertise colour the way Bulkhead is shaping up is very inspiring and exciting.
Collectively, we’ve contributed to Helldivers II, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, GTA VI and Star Citizen to mention just a few current franchises. All of that expertise and collective love for having fun with friends and sci-fi are the palette we’re using to render Bulkhead’s experience. We want our players to immerse themselves in a galaxy that will be, hopefully, very soon, not that far, far away ”
